Legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-Ocean) that would recognize investigators in the Department of Corrections as police officers passed the Senate today.
“These men and women serve an important role in providing for our public safety and they should be recognized for their hard work and sacrifice, ” Singer stated. “These investigators perform the same basic functions as local police officers, yet remain ineligible to participate in certain programs or apply for certain grants. That is not right.”

Proposal Would Help Local Government Avoid Placing Economic Burden on Property Taxpayers, Employees or School Children
All public employee salaries would be frozen for up to three years to allow local governments withstand tough economic times under legislation introduced today by Assemblymen Joe Malone and Declan O’Scanlon.

Republican Conference Leader Robert Singer (R-30) thanked the members of the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee for advancing S-2711, a bipartisan, common-sense bill that would make it easier and more efficient to reassess property values in New Jersey. Singer and Senator Paul Sarlo (D-36) are the primary sponsors of the legislation.
“Dramatic changes in property values require a forceful and prompt response,” Singer said. “Without common sense reform, our property tax system will be both overwhelmed and unfair. This bill allows assessors to ensure fairness and efficiency in property valuation.”

Senator Robert Singer, the ranking Republican member of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, issued the following statement regarding Governor-Elect Chris Christie’s choice for the next Commissioner of the Department of Health and Senior Services:
“I first want to commend Commissioner Howard for the fine job she has done during her tenure at the Department of Health. During her term at the department Commissioner Howard has accomplished many things that are good for the future of New Jersey. In particular, she was instrumental in expanding NJ Family Care.

Governor Jon Corzine’s proposal to address the projected $8 billion budget deficit for next year’s state budget is nothing more than the deceitful approach he used to balance this year’s spending plan said Assembly Republican Budget Committee members, Joseph Malone, Alison Little McHose, Declan O’Scanlon, and David Wolfe today.
Corzine revealed the details to the Star-Ledger’s editorial board in Trenton yesterday, saying he would make a smaller contribution to the state pension fund, continue the income tax surcharge and not fully fund state aid to local school districts.

The Senate Republican caucus announced today that they have unanimously voted to keep their strong leadership team in place for the next year. In addition, the senators also unanimously agreed to cast their votes for Senator Tom Kean as the next Senate president.
“Over the last decade, the policies of Governor Corzine and his allies have failed New Jersey’s struggling middle class,” Senate Republican Leader Kean said. “People are looking for change in Trenton, and our caucus is united and determined to provide real alternatives to the governor’s failed policies that will create jobs and make our state more affordable for everyone.”

Menendez, Lautenberg, Pallone & Rothman Received Donations from ReGen Biologics, Pressured FDA to Approve Company’s Medical Device
Senator Robert Singer (R-30) urged Governor Jon Corzine to join his call for the United States Attorney’s Office to investigate shocking revelations that four New Jersey congressmen exerted pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to force the approval of a medical device after receiving campaign donations from several executives of ReGen Biologics, the producer of the device.
In a published report, the New York Times stated: “The agency has never before publicly questioned the process behind one of its approvals, never admitted that a regulatory decision was influenced by politics, and never accused a former commissioner of questionable conduct.”

Senator Robert Singer, the senior Republican member of the Senate Health, Human Services & Senior Citizens Committee, expressed concern today about a recently announced proposal in the US Senate Finance Committee that could dramatically increase the premiums that New Jersey families pay for health insurance. The bill is schedule to be introduced today and marked up in the Finace Committee next week; it is sponsored by Montana Senator Max Baucus.

New Jersey Gets $26 Million for Police While Ohio Gets $80 Million
Senator Robert Singer, the Senate Republican Conference Leader, called on Governor Corzine and United State Senators Menendez and Lautenberg and an investigation and reconsideration of $1 billion of federal economic stimulus grants awarded to police departments throughout the country. On July 28, Vice President Joe Biden announced grant recipients and indicated that only 18 of approximately 300 local governments in New Jersey that spent time and money applying for grants received any funding.

“A bipartisan group of governors is trying to stop the federal government from shifting the costs of Medicaid to the states. Sadly, the State of New Jersey has not lent its voice to the growing chorus of voices opposing this additional burden on already stressed state taxpayers.
